What It Means to Be a Cosmetologist

Cosmetology is a word that gets thrown around a lot, but there are many things that fall under the umbrella of cosmetology. It isn’t a word that describes one thing or practice, like cutting hair. The American Heritage Dictionary defines cosmetics as “serving to beautify the body.” Cosmetology encompasses anything and everything that is done to make a person look and feel more beautiful. There are many things that cosmetologists do to achieve this. Here are a few of the main things:

One job that cosmetologists are most known for is cutting and styling hair. In cosmetology school they can teach you the very specific details and techniques to cutting and styling hair. For example, in school they can teach you how to use the proper chemicals based on the PH balance of the clients hair all the way down to the basic degrees of a haircut. Professional cosmetologists also spend a lot of time keeping up on the latest hair styles and trends in the area where they are working. Knowing what is popular and how to create that for their clients is an important part of being a successful cosmetologists. Hair is only one facet to what a cosmetologist does, but it’s a big piece of the puzzle!

The skin is something that cosmetologists help beautify as well. Performing services like facials and hair removal to make the skin more smooth and soft is one way they do this. They can also get training in makeup application and product usage. They can learn which products are most effective for certain skin types and which features to highlight using makeup based on face shape. The attention to detail learned by cosmetologists in makeup artistry is really amazing! There is so much they can do to create an entirely new look. This is why fashion magazines, Hollywood movie companies, and photographers hire trained cosmetologists to do hair and makeup for their actors and models.

Taking care of the nails and styling them is like adding the cherry on top. It’s the finishing touch type of work for a cosmetologist. If a client’s hair is done and skin is beautified, doing the nails is what tops it all off and completes the look!

Another important factor that goes into cosmetology these days is being professional and business savvy. Good cosmetologists take the time to learn about how to market themselves, find clients, and good customer service practices. Being able to find and keep clients happy is an important part of any profession, but with cosmetology it is pivotal to know how to do this better than most. During school, there is a significant amount of time dedicated to learning best business practices for cosmetologists to help them succeed. Learning the cosmetology techniques is only half of the battle. Knowing how to build up clientele is other half.
